Il Dente del Lupo

Our B&B is at a short distance from the Sanctuary of San Gabriele dell’Addolorata, in the county of Isola del Gran Sasso. The Sanctuary, dedicated to the popular saint, patron of youths, is one of the most celebrated in Italy and every year about 2 million people visit it, coming also from abroad. The adjacent ancient monastery, founded by San Francesco from Assisi in 1215, includes an old cloister with 15th century porches and a 16th century series of frescoes. The new Basilica of San Gabriele, a suggestive wide and modern church, houses also the International Biennale of Church Art.

San Giovanni ad Insulam
Isola del Gran Sasso is extremely rich of finds from the Medieval and the Renaissance period. Very interesting the San Massimo Church and the ancient complex of San Giovanni ad Insulam built in the 12th century beside the Mavone river. In the vicinity of Isola del Gran Sasso you can visit the ruins of the Castle of the Pagliara Earls, where San Berardo, patron of our county town Teramo, used to live. Do not miss also a visit to Santa Maria of Ronzano, a Romanic church as well, with a magnificent cycle of frescoes painted in 1181. In the past centuries lots of saints and hermits lived in our zone. The most suggestive hermitages are: the Eremo di San Nicola, more than 1.000 metres above sea level, halfway up the slope of Corno Grande; and the Eremo di Santa Colomba, daughter of the Pagliara Earls, 1234 metres, into the thick wood above the Pretara hamlet.

At a short distance from our B&B there is Castelli. This picturesque village, situated on the top of a gravel spur between two rivers and immersed into an unfouled environment, owes its prosperity to its ceramics, well-known in all the world. In the suggestive Monastery of the Frati Minori Osservanti is hosted the Museum that conserves and displays the ceramiche castellane made in the past centuries. In the vicinity there is the San Donato Church with its wonderful 17th century majolica roof, unique in Italy, which Carlo Levi called “the Cappella Sistina made in majolica".

Civitella Borbonic Fortress

At the foot of the Twin Mountains there is Civitella del Tronto Borbonic Fortress one of the most beautiful military engineering masterpieces of Italy. It lies on a rock crest and extends on a a total area of more than 25.000 square metres.
Two other towns deserve a visit: Campli and Atri. Campli has the San Paolo Church with one of the wooden “Holy Stairs” of Italy; the Santa Maria in Platea Church; the San Giovanni Church and the wonderful necropolis of Campovalano; Atri shows a wonderful cathedral and an ancient town council theatre.

Unequalled for its beauty is Santo Stefano di Sessanio village, in the Aquila county area. Situated on the top of a high incline (1250 m.a.s.l.), it maintains all the traditional and architectural characteristics of a 14th or 15th century town. In the vicinity there are the ruins of Rocca Calascio (1520 mts), built in the 11th century, in a wondeful white limestone (A little curiosity: the stronghold was the set of the famous movie “Lady Hawke”). From the citadel you can enjoy a spectacular panorama on Campo Imperatore and the Gran Sasso chain. At a short distance from Rocca Calascio  we can also visit the Santa Maria della Pietà Church.
