Il Dente del Lupo

Our zone is suitable for sevaral sports. The Gran Sasso and the Monti della Laga give plenty of opportunities for people who love walking and trekking, alpine hiking, skiing and horse riding as well.

For hikers there are lots of itineraries and traced tracks to go into wood, valleys and up to the highest peaks of the mountains.
The alpine hiking has been practiced for more than 100 years up to the limestone faces of the Gran Sasso. This is the favourite sport for local people and tourists, particularly up to the wonderful rocks of Corno Piccolo, Corno Grande, Pizzo Intermesoli and Monte Camicia.

The vertical rock faces of the Gran Sasso are also perfect for free climbing. The most interesting and attended faces are near Pietracamela and Monticchio (half an hour from our B&B). In Winter, all the highest massifs give opportunities to climb with ice axe and climbing irons, while in the valleys of the Monti della Laga you can have a look to the fantastic iced and gleaming waterfalls. Mountain guides and CAI (Italian Alpine Club) instructors will give you assistance to the hardest itineraries. Patholing devotees can go into the Grotta a Male on the Gran Sasso and in other caves on the Laga mountains. Torrent canoas itineraries abound on Monte Brancastello, Monte Prena and Monte Camicia.

Equestrian tourism has been practiced in Campo Imperatore for a long time and nowadays it is spreading also in further zones of the Park, thanks to the 300 kilometers horse riding trail that goes through all the territory of the Parco del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga. Several horse riding meetings, rallies, gatherings, Endurance races, pony-horses riding for children are organized for tourists, expecially during Summer time.

Riding

Rough roads, ancient sheep routes (called “tratturi”) and paths going through the high plateaus and the hills of Abruzzo represent an incredibly extended network for mountain bikers to ride. In Summer the most evocative and intriguing routes are on the mountains, particularly on the Campo Imperatore plateau. In the other seasons, the hill area can be enjoyed for your lovely ridings. Unevenness and astonishing panorama sceneries, added to very scarce car traffic, are an ideal ground for motorcyclists, during all  the seasons of the year.

You can also go canoeing on the crystalline waters of the Tirino river. The place is surrounded by a well preserved environment that is the ideal shelter for several species of water birds. The heavenly out-of-the-way bits into the nature of the Campotosto Lake are enjoyable from your windsurf or your canoa. A local sport team (incuding very good instructors with International lake waters Licence) gives  lessons both for adults and children. This will allow also beginners to surf or to go canoeing in whole security.

Ski

The variety of ski districts of Abruzzo includes ski resorts that are perfectly suitable both for adults and children. The nearest ski resorts, from our B&B, are in Campo Imperatore, Prati di Tivo or Prato Selva. For alpine-skiers there are wonderful and exciting itineraries as the Traversata Alta and the Traversata Bassa of the Gran Sasso and the tracks leading to Monte Camicia and Monte Gorzano.  The lightly undulated plateaus, the wood full of mule paths and also the gentle slopes of the valleys will offer cross-country skiers an extraordinary veriety of marvellous routes. One of the most interesting and beautiful is the Ceppo, where a ski trail leads into the heart of the Maltese wood. The ring trails of Campo Imperatore, near the village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Castel del Monte, face on exceptional panoramas.
