Your holiday in our zone will be a unique occasion for a journey in the delicious taste of the Abruzzo traditional food.  Traditional cooking and genuine ingredients are a daily pleasure in our homes. The typical cooking is based on the absolute genuinity of local products: meats, cured pork meats, cheese, ricotta and other fresh cheese made from sheep’s milk, chickpeas and lentils, country and mountain beet tops, vegetables and potatoes. Home-made pasta (from the “scrippelle mbosse” to the “maccheroni alla chitarra” or the “timballo”) is flanked by plain meat dishes as the sheep “arrosticini” or more complex dishes as the sheep “alla callara”.

Extremely delicious are some special mushroom dishes and also pulse soupes or soupes with chestnuts from the Laga mountains. The most delicious recipe is the “virtù”, containing 7 different kinds of fresh vegetables, 7 different dried vegetables and 7 kinds of pulse.

Journeying around the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga, you can also taste high quality typical products such as : the lentils from Santo Stefano di Sassanio, the “farro”, the “cicerchia” from Castelvecchio Calvisio, the Mortadella from Campotosto, the “ventricina” from la Laga, and also liver sausages, the “canestrato” from Castel del Monte, the “pecorino” from Farindola and the saffron from Navelli.

 

For the most gourmand people we advise also to taste the delicious sweets of Abruzzo, such as the classical “sweet pizza”, a mild cake imbibed with different liquours and divided in alternated vanilla and chocolate cream layers; the “calcionetti”: deep fried puffpaste stuffed with chestnut or chickpea cream; the “sfogliatelle”, puffpaste crescents with a jam filling and flavoured with chocolate cream; the “bocconotti”: shortbread biscuits with a filling of grape jam.

And then the “mostaccioli”, the pepper biscuits “pepatelli”, the Easter sweet pizza and many other delicious sweets. It is warmly reccommended to taste all these specialities accompanying them with the best Abruzzo wines, especially the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, the Moscatello from Castiglione a Casauria, and other DOP products coming from our florid hills and appreciated in all the world.
